Gambian Home Cooking Experience

Gambian Home Cooking Experience

A full-day immersive culinary experience where you shop at local markets, cook traditional Gambian dishes, and share a homemade meal with locals — a true taste of The Gambia.

Step into the heart of The Gambia and discover the vibrant flavors and traditions that define our culture. The Gambian Home Cooking Experience is more than a cooking class — it’s a day of connection, storytelling, and culinary discovery guided by local hosts.

Your journey begins with a visit to a bustling local market, alive with color, rhythm, and friendly conversation. Dressed in traditional Gambian attire, you’ll shop alongside your host, learning how to choose the freshest ingredients — from locally caught fish and vibrant vegetables to aromatic spices and grains. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into everyday Gambian life and food culture.

Back at a family compound kitchen, the real magic begins. You’ll roll up your sleeves and cook side by side with your hosts, preparing authentic dishes such as Benachin (Gambian Jollof Rice) and Yassa, a savory meat or fish stew marinated with onions and lemon. You’ll also learn to make refreshing local juices like Baobab and Wonjo — a deep red hibiscus drink with a tangy, cranberry-like flavor.

Throughout the experience, you’ll be guided through every step — from cleaning and seasoning fish to cooking rice over open fire. The day ends with a shared meal, where guests and hosts sit together as one family, enjoying the food you’ve prepared and exchanging laughter, stories, and culture.
